Coconut oil toothpaste might be the next step in dental health. Due to sensitivity, over the counter toothpaste and rinses are just too irritating. Many will be happy that a coconut oil alternative is being researched.

Coconut oil has been all the craze lately and for good reason; it is amazing. It has great antibacterial properties that hold significant benefits to the mouth.

About the Study

Recently, a study conducted at the Athlone Institute proved that coconut oil is the best remedy among natural oils for dental care. It is a great antibacterial agent and it stops bacterial growth in the mouth when treated with digestive enzymes. Moreover, it can prevent tooth decay by protecting against Streptococcus and S Mutans, which are acid-producing bacteria. These bacteria get the energy from sugars and trigger and acidic mouth. This condition can lead to tooth decay.

Dr. Damien Brady, the lead researcher from Athlone Institute of Technology, stated, “Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection.”
