10 Habits That Damage The Brain!

Your brain is obviously a very important part of your being. It is one of the largest organs in your body and is the main control center for every function that happens in your day-to-day life. It carries a heck of a lot of information around and has an endless list of responsibilities!

The brain is also surprisingly delicate. In recent years, the World Health Organization released what they consider to be the top 10 brain-damaging habits that are common among people today.

1. Skipping breakfast

I keep hearing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but we do know a lot of people who avoid it on a daily basis, including those that tend to reduce blood sugar levels.

However, after a night of sleeping and eating nothing, avoiding the morning breakfast will provide your brain the nutrients, which can lead to brain degeneration.

2. Lack of sleep

Long term sleep deprivation speeds up the death of brain cells. We want and need to keep our brain cells around for as long as possible! Sleep gives your brain a chance to rest and repair itself after long and sometimes stressful days. Make sleep a priority and do what it takes to get more of it!

3. High Sugar consumption

Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

4. Overeating

Overeating leads to weight gain, bloating and reduced mental strength and possible clogging of the arteries to the brain.

5. Smoking

This is one of the most detrimental habits and despite all the other side effects, it also leads to “multiple brain shrinkage”, as well as diseases of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

6. Covering the head while sleeping

This one surprised me too. Sleeping with your head covered goes along with #5 in the fact that it reduces your oxygen intake at night. Since you are asleep, you might not even realize that you’re light-headed or air deprived. You also raise the chance of inhaling too much carbon dioxide. Play it safe and keep the covers off your face!

7. Working Your Brain During Illness

We live in a go-go-go society and some of us are so driven or determined to succeed that we refuse to rest when we get sick. The truth is, when our body shows signs of illness, it’s often the body’s way of telling us we need to SLOW DOWN and reconsider our current lifestyle. It is ALSO telling us that our BRAIN needs a break! Pushing through sickness, continuing to study or work or do whatever it is we do every day can actually decrease the effectiveness of and damage the brain.

8. Air pollution

The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

The best would be to visit mountains and breathe fresh air as much as you can.

9. Lack of stimulating thoughts

Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

This is also a cause linked to the other 9 brain damaging habits. By following bad habits we create a wall that block our thoughts to emerge in our imagination.

10. Similar to #9, talking to people helps your brain to grow and develop. Participating in intellectual conversations will stretch and strengthen your brain and help the efficiency of the brain over time.
