We have learned that United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has destroyed hundreds of illegal containers imported from China. All happened at the Port of San Francisco, where they found packages with rat meat.
There would be nothing strange, despite the fact that the rat meat was planned to be sold as chicken. The nasty meat had been planned to be shipped for various points in several states, and then sold at the market as chicken.
They warn that there might be another 300,000 lbs. of counterfeit rat meat still around the USA. Ronal Jones, an FDA inspector, claims that this meat is not that dangerous when cooked completely. However, the import and sales of meat like this are prohibited in the USA.
One of the FBI coordinators, Allen James, says that the business with such meat brings great profit. Talking about profit, he also mentioned the case of opossum meat that arrived from Mexico. For him, this is one of the ways criminal organizations use to make illegal money.
The thing is that consumers cannot really make a difference between legal meat and such ‘delicacies.’ The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) spokesman, Jenny Brookside, says that it’s too late for the produce that has already been sold on the market. According to her, the only way to notice any difference between chicken and rat meat is to determine whether the meat has a slightly ‘different’ taste than usual, and if that is the case, then hat meat might be counterfeit meat.
According to a 2014, FDA study, 36 million of illegally imported meat is sold in the United States.
